Dividers: drag from one point to another on the chart

Start a drag on a charted object or buoy and it snaps to it. The readout gives the true bearing (and magnetic, 7°W) from where you start to where you are, and the distance in nautical miles.

Skill 3 · Dead reckoningProblem 2003

Two legs from a 1025 fix: where is the 1110 DR?

At 1025 you fix your position 220°T, 1.3 nm from Tern Island tower. You steer 157°T at 7.6 kn until 1055, then 241°T at 4.0 kn until 1110.

Give the 1110 DR position as the true bearing FROM Mill stack to the DR, and the distance. Courses are true and speeds are through the water; dead reckoning ignores current and leeway.

Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).
