Dividers: drag from one point to another on the chart

Start a drag on a charted object or buoy and it snaps to it. The readout gives the true bearing (and magnetic, 7°W) from where you start to where you are, and the distance in nautical miles.

Skill 3 · Dead reckoningProblem 52005

Two legs from a 1200 fix: where is the 1245 DR?

At 1200 you fix your position 354°T, 3.1 nm from Mill stack. You steer 056°T at 4.4 kn until 1230, then 201°T at 5.2 kn until 1245.

Give the 1245 DR position as the true bearing FROM Gannet Rock daybeacon to the DR, and the distance. Courses are true and speeds are through the water; dead reckoning ignores current and leeway.

Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).
