Dividers: drag from one point to another on the chart

Start a drag on a charted object or buoy and it snaps to it. The readout gives the true bearing (and magnetic, 7°W) from where you start to where you are, and the distance in nautical miles.

Skill 3 · Dead reckoningProblem 6005

Two legs from a 1100 fix: where is the 1145 DR?

At 1100 you fix your position 055°T, 3.0 nm from Heron Point Light. You steer 040°T at 8.3 kn until 1115, then 212°T at 5.6 kn until 1145.

Give the 1145 DR position as the true bearing FROM Heron Point Light to the DR, and the distance. Courses are true and speeds are through the water; dead reckoning ignores current and leeway.

Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).
