Skill 4 · Two-bearing fixProblem 113004

Two hand-bearing compass bearings at 0950: plot the fix.

At 0950 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Heron Point Light bears 250°M and Kittle water tank bears 161°M.

Variation is 7°W (from the rose); a hand-bearing compass held away from the boat's steel is taken to have no deviation. Convert to true, plot the two lines of position, and give the fix as the true bearing FROM Gannet Rock daybeacon to the fix, and the distance.

Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).
