Skill 4 · Two-bearing fixProblem 122008

Two hand-bearing compass bearings at 0715: plot the fix.

At 0715 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Mill stack bears 179°M and Westfield church spire bears 284°M.

Variation is 7°W (from the rose); a hand-bearing compass held away from the boat's steel is taken to have no deviation. Convert to true, plot the two lines of position, and give the fix as the true bearing FROM Red nun "2" to the fix, and the distance.

Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).
