Skill 4 · Two-bearing fixProblem 13008
Two hand-bearing compass bearings at 1300: plot the fix.
At 1300 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Gannet Rock daybeacon bears 068°M and Westfield church spire bears 309°M.
Variation is 7°W (from the rose); a hand-bearing compass held away from the boat's steel is taken to have no deviation. Convert to true, plot the two lines of position, and give the fix as the true bearing FROM Mill stack to the fix, and the distance.
Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).
