Skill 4 · Two-bearing fixProblem 172002

Two hand-bearing compass bearings at 0830: plot the fix.

At 0830 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Westfield church spire bears 264°M and Kittle water tank bears 144°M.

Variation is 7°W (from the rose); a hand-bearing compass held away from the boat's steel is taken to have no deviation. Convert to true, plot the two lines of position, and give the fix as the true bearing FROM Green can "3" to the fix, and the distance.

Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).
