Skill 4 · Two-bearing fixProblem 2001

Two hand-bearing compass bearings at 1310: plot the fix.

At 1310 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Heron Point Light bears 208°M and Westfield church spire bears 258°M.

Variation is 7°W (from the rose); a hand-bearing compass held away from the boat's steel is taken to have no deviation. Convert to true, plot the two lines of position, and give the fix as the true bearing FROM Green can "3" to the fix, and the distance.

Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).
