Skill 4 · Two-bearing fixProblem 21004
Two hand-bearing compass bearings at 1735: plot the fix.
At 1735 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Kittle water tank bears 188°M and Gannet Rock daybeacon bears 298°M.
Variation is 7°W (from the rose); a hand-bearing compass held away from the boat's steel is taken to have no deviation. Convert to true, plot the two lines of position, and give the fix as the true bearing FROM Bell buoy "HS" to the fix, and the distance.
Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).
