Skill 4 · Two-bearing fixProblem 211004

Two hand-bearing compass bearings at 1430: plot the fix.

At 1430 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Gannet Rock daybeacon bears 312°M and Kittle water tank bears 205°M.

Variation is 7°W (from the rose); a hand-bearing compass held away from the boat's steel is taken to have no deviation. Convert to true, plot the two lines of position, and give the fix as the true bearing FROM Bell buoy "HS" to the fix, and the distance.

Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).
