Skill 4 · Two-bearing fixProblem 213004
Two hand-bearing compass bearings at 1145: plot the fix.
At 1145 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Gannet Rock daybeacon bears 108°M and Heron Point Light bears 178°M.
Variation is 7°W (from the rose); a hand-bearing compass held away from the boat's steel is taken to have no deviation. Convert to true, plot the two lines of position, and give the fix as the true bearing FROM Westfield church spire to the fix, and the distance.
Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).
