Skill 4 · Two-bearing fixProblem 28003

Two hand-bearing compass bearings at 1400: plot the fix.

At 1400 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Heron Point Light bears 230°M and Gannet Rock daybeacon bears 118°M.

Variation is 7°W (from the rose); a hand-bearing compass held away from the boat's steel is taken to have no deviation. Convert to true, plot the two lines of position, and give the fix as the true bearing FROM Red nun "2" to the fix, and the distance.

Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).
