Skill 4 · Two-bearing fixProblem 281008

Two hand-bearing compass bearings at 1650: plot the fix.

At 1650 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Kittle water tank bears 150°M and Heron Point Light bears 270°M.

Variation is 7°W (from the rose); a hand-bearing compass held away from the boat's steel is taken to have no deviation. Convert to true, plot the two lines of position, and give the fix as the true bearing FROM Gannet Rock daybeacon to the fix, and the distance.

Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).
