Skill 4 · Two-bearing fixProblem 3006

Two hand-bearing compass bearings at 1600: plot the fix.

At 1600 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Heron Point Light bears 272°M and Gannet Rock daybeacon bears 033°M.

Variation is 7°W (from the rose); a hand-bearing compass held away from the boat's steel is taken to have no deviation. Convert to true, plot the two lines of position, and give the fix as the true bearing FROM Kittle water tank to the fix, and the distance.

Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).
