Skill 4 · Two-bearing fixProblem 47004

Two hand-bearing compass bearings at 0805: plot the fix.

At 0805 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Mill stack bears 186°M and Westfield church spire bears 250°M.

Variation is 7°W (from the rose); a hand-bearing compass held away from the boat's steel is taken to have no deviation. Convert to true, plot the two lines of position, and give the fix as the true bearing FROM Tern Island tower to the fix, and the distance.

Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).
