Skill 4 · Two-bearing fixProblem 7006

Two hand-bearing compass bearings at 1435: plot the fix.

At 1435 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Gannet Rock daybeacon bears 138°M and Heron Point Light bears 254°M.

Variation is 7°W (from the rose); a hand-bearing compass held away from the boat's steel is taken to have no deviation. Convert to true, plot the two lines of position, and give the fix as the true bearing FROM Tern Island tower to the fix, and the distance.

Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).
