Skill 4 · Two-bearing fixProblem 80001

Two hand-bearing compass bearings at 1200: plot the fix.

At 1200 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Gannet Rock daybeacon bears 097°M and Heron Point Light bears 217°M.

Variation is 7°W (from the rose); a hand-bearing compass held away from the boat's steel is taken to have no deviation. Convert to true, plot the two lines of position, and give the fix as the true bearing FROM Green can "1" to the fix, and the distance.

Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).
