Skill 4 · Two-bearing fixProblem 8004

Two hand-bearing compass bearings at 0925: plot the fix.

At 0925 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Mill stack bears 193°M and Heron Point Light bears 260°M.

Variation is 7°W (from the rose); a hand-bearing compass held away from the boat's steel is taken to have no deviation. Convert to true, plot the two lines of position, and give the fix as the true bearing FROM Red nun "2" to the fix, and the distance.

Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).
