Skill 4 · Two-bearing fixProblem 9004

Two hand-bearing compass bearings at 1640: plot the fix.

At 1640 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Heron Point Light bears 277°M and Gannet Rock daybeacon bears 004°M.

Variation is 7°W (from the rose); a hand-bearing compass held away from the boat's steel is taken to have no deviation. Convert to true, plot the two lines of position, and give the fix as the true bearing FROM Kittle water tank to the fix, and the distance.

Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).
