Skill 4 · Two-bearing fixProblem 9005
Two hand-bearing compass bearings at 1010: plot the fix.
At 1010 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Gannet Rock daybeacon bears 103°M and Mill stack bears 159°M.
Variation is 7°W (from the rose); a hand-bearing compass held away from the boat's steel is taken to have no deviation. Convert to true, plot the two lines of position, and give the fix as the true bearing FROM Red nun "2" to the fix, and the distance.
Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).
