Skill 4 · Two-bearing fixProblem 91007
Two hand-bearing compass bearings at 1440: plot the fix.
At 1440 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Heron Point Light bears 191°M and Gannet Rock daybeacon bears 110°M.
Variation is 7°W (from the rose); a hand-bearing compass held away from the boat's steel is taken to have no deviation. Convert to true, plot the two lines of position, and give the fix as the true bearing FROM Westfield church spire to the fix, and the distance.
Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).
