Skill 4 · Two-bearing fixProblem 99003
Two hand-bearing compass bearings at 1650: plot the fix.
At 1650 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Heron Point Light bears 184°M and Gannet Rock daybeacon bears 103°M.
Variation is 7°W (from the rose); a hand-bearing compass held away from the boat's steel is taken to have no deviation. Convert to true, plot the two lines of position, and give the fix as the true bearing FROM Westfield church spire to the fix, and the distance.
Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).
