  1. At 1540 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Kittle water tank bears 200°M and Gannet Rock daybeacon bears 255°M.

Variation is 7°W (from the rose); a hand-bearing compass held away from the boat's steel is taken to have no deviation. Convert to true, plot the two lines of position, and give the fix as the true bearing FROM Bell buoy "HS" to the fix, and the distance.

Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).

Bearing from Bell buoy "HS": ________ °T   Distance: ________ nm

  2. At 0820 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Gannet Rock daybeacon bears 238°M and Kittle water tank bears 184°M.

  3. At 1550 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Westfield church spire bears 300°M and Heron Point Light bears 221°M.

Variation is 7°W (from the rose); a hand-bearing compass held away from the boat's steel is taken to have no deviation. Convert to true, plot the two lines of position, and give the fix as the true bearing FROM Red nun "2" to the fix, and the distance.

Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).

Bearing from Red nun "2": ________ °T   Distance: ________ nm

  4. At 1235 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Heron Point Light bears 258°M and Mill stack bears 185°M.

  5. At 1415 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Mill stack bears 145°M and Gannet Rock daybeacon bears 095°M.

Variation is 7°W (from the rose); a hand-bearing compass held away from the boat's steel is taken to have no deviation. Convert to true, plot the two lines of position, and give the fix as the true bearing FROM Green can "1" to the fix, and the distance.

Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).

Bearing from Green can "1": ________ °T   Distance: ________ nm

  6. At 1145 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Mill stack bears 169°M and Gannet Rock daybeacon bears 106°M.

  7. At 1435 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Heron Point Light bears 251°M and Gannet Rock daybeacon bears 178°M.

Variation is 7°W (from the rose); a hand-bearing compass held away from the boat's steel is taken to have no deviation. Convert to true, plot the two lines of position, and give the fix as the true bearing FROM Tern Island tower to the fix, and the distance.

Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).

Bearing from Tern Island tower: ________ °T   Distance: ________ nm

  8. At 1225 you take two bearings with a hand-bearing compass: Heron Point Light bears 271°M and Kittle water tank bears 150°M.

Variation is 7°W (from the rose); a hand-bearing compass held away from the boat's steel is taken to have no deviation. Convert to true, plot the two lines of position, and give the fix as the true bearing FROM Gannet Rock daybeacon to the fix, and the distance.

Tolerance: 2° and 0.15 nm (or 4 % of the distance).

Bearing from Gannet Rock daybeacon: ________ °T   Distance: ________ nm
